6. It seems, however, that he had read Dante’s Divine Comedy (see CW Vol. I, p. 112; Vol. III, pp. 234, 230). In Dante love is an important theme, informed by the philosophy of his time, including that of Thomas Aquinas. In the Paradiso he declares his faith with the words, “I believe in one God, / one and eternal, who / Himself unmoved, moves / all the heavens with His love and their desire” (XXIV.132); the entire poem ends with the line, “the Love that moves the sun and all the other stars” (XXXIII.145). See Dante Alighieri, Paradiso, translated by Robert Hollander and Jean Hollander, with introduction and notes by Robert Hollander (New York: Anchor Books, 2007), pp. 661, 917.
